European OSY400 Round 1 (San Nazzaro ITALY)

1st Jul 2008

Unfortunately Team-21 Craig Speller were not able to attend this meeeting. Sean Barnard UK was able to attend and qualified in second position on the grid following the time trials. In a field of 22 boats, Diego Bacchiega (Italy ) established pole with a time of 1.02.0, Barnard improved his times to come with 2 hundredths of a second of pole.
In the first of four heats, with all 22 boats starting, Bacchiega stormed off in the lead, Barnard making a slow start edged his way up the inside in the Peverelle kneeler then found a hole at the first turn and he was ejected from the cockpit as the hull overturned. Bacchiega in his modified Lucas boat took the win in the restart with a four second advantage over Stefan Probst (Germany) and 2006 European champion Miroslav Basinski (Slovakia). Italians Tomasso Ghisani and GSC team racer Manuel Zambelli headed the defending European champion Erzsebet Lucas-Ticska (Germany) , then Italians Zillioli, Iemmi and Narduzzi. Sten Kalder (Estonia), who had won the World JT250 championship in Poland the previous weekend, was having his first big competition in the OSY 400 class in his Povvat boat coming home behind Slovakian Csaba Szep, then the two Lithuanians Laura Stainyte and Dominykas Stankevicius.
Bacchiega scored another 400 points in heat two, winning by a margin of 3.2 seconds over Tomasso Ghisani, with Bazinsky leading Zambelli, with Probst fourth this time ahead of Narduzzi, Iemmi and Zillioli. Lucas-Ticska was ninth and the World champion Barnard retired on lap 3 with a seized motor. Sten Kalder and Eva Sacherlova became locked together after a collision on a buoy turn, but there were 18 finishers in a hectic race.
Heat three was stopped on the third lap when a three boat collision on the pit turn resulted in Ronald Iemmi being taken to hospital with quite serious injuries, but he is now in a stable condition following an operation. Nineteen boats participated in the restart which was again interrupted when Tomasso Ghisani crashed out. Diego Bacchiega took the win by 4.5 seconds from Miroslav Bazinski and Zambelli with Probst fourth. Barnard with a rebuilt motor, worked his way through to ninth from the back of the grid.
Fourteen drivers took part in heat 4 , with Bacchiega already assured of the win and sitting it out. Bazinski raced to the heat win from Zambelli and Probst, then the Trombetta boat of Michal Kosut (SK), Alex Zillioli, Eva Sacherlova (SK), and Marcel Harse (CZ) Barnard came home eighth ahead of Kalder, Stainyte and Algo Kuus (Est).
